Homeownership & the Positive Effect on Children

April 29, 2020

The Facts
Buying a home is quite possibly the biggest financial step most of us will make in our lifetime. While there's nothing wrong with renting while getting a plan together, a 2001 report by the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University shows that choosing to rent as a long-term lifestyle can have less than stellar effects on a person, specifically children, whose cognitive abilities are still rapidly developing. In fact, their 29-page report on The Impact of Homeownership on Child Outcomes has more than a handful of reasons how being a homeowner creates successful kids. From increased confidence due to location stability (not moving frequently) to an increase in social capital (stronger bonds with peers over time), the benefits of living in an owned home are tremendous.

12 to 23 Percent
That's the performance gap Harvard found between children who live in owned homes versus those raised in a rental environment. This includes findings like children of homeowners "achieving math scores up to nine percent higher, reading scores up to seven percent higher, and reductions in children's behavior problems of up to three percent.
